In 1980’s, the owner’s father opened his restaurant in Hasunuma. Later on, the restaurant moved to Kamata. In those days, there were only about 20 Indian restaurants in Tokyo, and there were the pros and cons of the smooth texture of Indian curry which many people in Japan were not familiar with. However, the number of fans gradually increased. Unfortunately, the owner passed away in 2006, and the restaurant in Kamata had to close. Today, only this one in Shinbashi is in business, still popular.
This place is so popular that customers make a line in the lunch hour. The Indian curry which features a refined balance of spices offers three levels of spicy hot menus. The Hot makes you literally hot from inside of the body and makes you sweat even in cold winter. In summer, because of the perspiration, you may feel the air cooler. The spices amplify the depth of flavor and “umami” of the curry. They also offer turmeric, garam masala, raisins, and pickled vegetables to adjust the taste.
Located on the basement floor of a multiple-tenant building, with a small red and white signboard of the restaurant, Taj Mahal Shinbashi-ten attracts many customers in the lunch hour, waiting in a line on stairway to the basement floor, and a restaurant staff taking orders can be seen. The interior of the restaurant is made of wood and decorated with Indian ornaments. It has seven tables with four seats. If you don’t mind sharing a table with others, you can visit alone without hesitation.
On the stairway to the restaurant, you can smell a well-balanced scent of spices, which stimulates your appetite. It is a proof of a good restaurant. They are particular about the spiciness of the smooth curry. The Hot curry is made with spices which invigorate the stomach and intestines. The Medium-Hot curry is a combination of Indian and European style curry. The Mild made with vegetable oil has a gentle light taste.
