Dazaifu Tenman-gu in Dazaifu-city, Fukuoka prefecture is a shrine that worships the God (the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane). Along with Tenman-gu in Kyoto, Dazaifu Tenman-gu is a head shrine which is very famous nation wide.

This Shinto shrine was built in 919. Sugawara no Michizane who was a noble and a politician in Heian era was demoted to Dazaifu from Kyoto, and died at a government office in 903. After his death, it was said that he was cursing the Court as natural disasters kept occurring and became a subject to a faith. Today, he is believed in as a God of learning since he was good at studies.
Many students preparing for an exam visit here to pray for their success. The precinct would be full of people especially around a season of an exam which is from Jan. to Mar. "Pass an exam for a *** university!" "Success in an exam for ***". Like this, wishes are written on Ema (a votive tablet).
Also, Dazaifu Tenman-gu is knows as one of the best places to visit on New Year's day. Approx. 2 million people visit here for 3 days from 1st to 3rd Jan. No parking lot can be found as it is predicted to be all full around this time of year. Using train as an access is recommended since there would be a traffic jam.
The main shrine is designated as an important cultural property with the beautiful 5 bays. The precinct is very wide and open.
" When the east wind blows, let it make an odor ah plum blossom, even though the master has gone, do not forget spring" Sugawara no Michizane wrote when he left for Dazaifu. There's a sacred tree called "Tobiume" which is said it adored him and flied there from Kyoto over a night. Dazaifu Tenman-gu is a shrine with plum trees that around 200 species; 6000 trees bloom in spring and the shrine is surrounded by a scent of plums.

Because Sugawara no Michizane is enshrined as the God of learning, charms for passing an exam, success in employment, and entering a new school sell. It also encourages you to make efforts to study on a daily basis as well as for an exam with this charm.
