The most famous winter event in Sapporo is Sapporo Snow Festival, but it is not the only event that attracts many people. Started from 1981, Sapporo White Illumination has been held for 36 times (Snow Festival, 68 times), and it is becoming another winter icon of Sapporo. The event was started with about 1,000 light bulbs which decorated the Nishi Nichome Hiroba in the Odori Park, and the scale of the event is getting bigger and bigger.

Sapporo White Illumination is held from late November to mid-February. During the event, art works which represent the images of Hokkaido’s nature and Christmas can be seen at the Odori Park, Ekimae-dori, and Minami Ichijo-dori, and trees are illuminated in the park to create fantastic scenery. From November 25 to December 24, the Munich Christmas Market in Sapporo is also held and attracts many tourists.
The illumination amplifies the Christmas mood much more, together with the Christmas market at Odori Koen Nichome. During the Christmas season, the illumination hour is extended to 0:00, which makes a popular dating spot. In 2016, a new art work of light was added to the event, and the venue was expanded from Ichichome to Hachichome. The number of light bulbs also got much bigger: 830,000.

For Sapporo White Illumination, various events are planed. The organizer tries to find volunteers who want to light the illumination at the venue in Odori and the TV tower, like groups of people, couples, or families. They also holds “Hikari-no Objet Stamp Rally” in which some participants can get gift-certificates or meal tickets if they are lucky.
At the Munich Christmas Market in Sapporo, the symbol of Sapporo White Illumination is exhibited. There are various stores around the venue that offer Christmas items from Germany or from other European countries, German foods, “Glühwein (hot wine with cinnamon and orange)”, and handicrafts made by artists in Hokkaido. There is even a warm rest area with a heater.
At Ichichome (the 1st block), the symbol of Saspporo, Sappoto TV Tower is illuminated beautifully with a theme: Love. An “aka-ezomastu” pine tree is decorated with a heart-shape to make it a venue of Love in Sapporo. It is said that its origin was two “aka-matsu” pine trees, given by the town of Hiroo, which the locals decorated with light bulbs. In 2002, another tree was planted at the venue. You will see a heart shape when you look it down from the Sapporo TV’s viewing platform.
At the venue of Nichome (the 2nd block), the Munich Christmas Market in Sapporo has been held since 2002 because Munich is one of the sister cities of Sapporo. At the market, traditional dishes, sweets, souvenirs from Germany are sold, and you will even find some Russian stuff.
At the venue of Sanchome (the 3rd block), a colorful fountain called “Snow Crystal” is a must-see.

At Rokuchome (the 6th block), here you will see an artwork made with a big tree, a maze of lights, and a video material.
